The Olympics have come to a close, and while we’re sad to see them go, they leave behind a treasure trove of memories and – believe it or not – valuable lessons for the wine industry!
Celebrating the Games: A Fan’s Perspective
At our household, we were glued to the action, especially loved the world of Beach Volleyball and Track and Field. We cheered & replayed over and over Cole Hocker’s incredible 1500 meter win, US & Canadian Beach Volleyball teams, and the awe-inspiring Sifan Hassain who snagged medals in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and gold in the marathon! Plus, our new favorite gold medal couple: Long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall and her husband, 400 meter Paralympic Hunter Woodhall.
The Power of Strong Branding: A Lesson for Wineries
Beyond the athletic feats, one aspect of the Olympics truly resonated: the power of strong event branding. The Paris 2024 logo, with its stylized flame symbolizing achievement, served as a constant reminder of the games’ spirit. This wasn’t just a random image; it became instantly recognizable and evoked emotions in viewers worldwide.
The Wine Industry Takes Note: Branding Your Events
This concept translates beautifully to the wine industry. Just like the Olympics, your winery events deserve a distinct, memorable brand identity. We do this every year for Illinois Wine festivals – their branding seamlessly flows across digital ads, emails, blog posts, and even physical materials like signage and handouts. Consistency is key!
Marketing, the Olympian Feat: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint
The Olympics also showcased the dedication required for success. Olympians don’t get there overnight; they train tirelessly, day in and day out. Similarly, marketing isn’t a one-shot deal. It’s a continuous effort, a series of “tiny steps” that add up over time.
Think of it this way: a single Facebook ad or email blast is like an Olympian attempting speed work just once and then giving up. Marketing is about reaching your target audience at multiple touchpoints throughout their journey – from initial awareness to loyal customer.
